ABOUT US
Her DJ Club (HDC) is an empowering and transformative initiative that is dedicated to creating a supportive, women-led space where women can learn the fundamentals of DJing while fostering community and breaking into a male-dominated industry.
Founded by murcutian in March 2024, HDC is built on the foundation of her experience as a local DJ, and her passion for sharing knowledge with other women in her community.
Held in Oakland, CA, HDC offers an 8-week course where students are introduced to the fundamentals of DJing. The program covers essential skills such as counting music, beat matching, curating and organizing music, and preparing for live performances. Students work closely with murcutian and other mentors to understand both the technical and creative aspects of DJing, with the ultimate goal of performing live and potentially monetizing their skills.
The first class, which graduated in August 2024 with seven students, marked a significant milestone. Those students went on to successfully book and play at least two gigs. Since then, ten more students have graduated, and eight more women are currently learning and honing their DJ skills.
The culmination of their hard work is celebrated with a live graduation showcase, an event that not only marks their growth but also brings the local community together to celebrate music, their talent, and their creativity.
HDC is rooted in the belief that creating a safe space for women to learn and connect can have a profound impact on their lives, both personally and professionally. The course not only teaches technical skills but also provides opportunities for women to network, support one another, and build lasting relationships that extend beyond the workshop.
Our Team
Julia AKA murcutian
Julia aka murcutian is a Bay Area selector, born and raised in San Francisco’s Mission District. A child of an immigrant family from El Salvador - she was exposed to music from an early age. Inspired by her love for music, she began her career as a DJ in 2018, in her bedroom. Not long after, she took to performing at live events.
“The DJ industry continues to lack adequate Female representation, particularly for Women and Gender expansive People of color. My vision was to facilitate a space where Women can explore a craft that is often dismissed as simple entertainment, yet is deeply rooted in artistic expression. Early on, I recognized a clear need for this type of space within my own community. I had previously encountered a similar initiative, which was positioned as a Women-centered collective. However, what stood out to me was the presence of men throughout the entire course. That experience highlighted the importance of creating a space that was truly and intentionally exclusive to women, a space where they could feel fully safe, affirmed, and empowered without compromise. This experience became one of the biggest reasons why we are very intentionally Women operated and why this continues to be a driving force in how we move through this space.
Representation matters. We have a responsibility to break barriers, disrupt stereotypes, and embody the belief that anything is possible with dedication and passion, not just for ourselves, but for those who follow. It is equally important to learn or re-learn, what it means to be in a true community. A lot of us speak of being in community but may not always know how to practice it in real ways. When I founded HDC, my deepest intention was to build genuine connections with fellow music lovers. But beyond that, I recognized how many Women have a profound love and understanding of music, yet often lack spaces where their perspectives and ideas are truly celebrated. In my humble opinion, a great DJ is not only a student of music but also someone who understands the power of how it can bring people together. It is in the intersection of technical skill and communal care, where true artistry can manifest itself and make a wide impact in the communities we live in.
With this workshop, I hope to help build long-lasting partnerships and empower Women by teaching them a skill they can feel good about. Music has always been very healing and learning to DJ has been life-changing to me. My intention as your instructor is to share everything I know to help unlock that part of your creativity. To honor your commitment to learning an art form I hold so much love and respect for. I promise to do my best to teach you the fundamentals of DJing as I see them, to help create a strong foundation for this new beginning in your creative journey. I’m grateful for your trust and I’m looking forward to working with you! Let’s get it!”

Junior Woodson AKA The Junior
Meet HDC Professor in the making: Junior Woodson. A San Francisco native who began her DJ career in late 2018 after a friend gave her a quick lesson on a pair of CDJ 2000s. During the pandemic, she dedicated time to building her skill and shaping her sound. Rooted in R&B, jazz, and gospel, she wove these influences into an eclectic style that stood apart from the norm, curating a sound distinctly her own. Over the years, she has built an impressive resume of residencies, including A Family Affair, Mother SF, and her own R&B party at the legendary White Horse bar.
Her foundation in community work led her to launch Ladies Love House Music, a radio show centered on women in the industry. Through this platform, she creates space for women, often overlooked in the scene, to fully express themselves and be heard. During SF Black Pride week, she took on the role of events coordinator, curating spaces in San Francisco for queer members of the African American community. This work holds particular weight in a city where the AA community makes up just 3% of the overall population, and an even smaller portion of the nightlife industry.
When asked why she’s joining HCD as an Emerging co-professor this semester - “I’m a GIRLS girl! Even in my masculine. I’ve watched how the industry hasn’t been too kind to women over the years, including me. I have been watching Julia uplift, not just the women coming out of Her DJ Club, but the state of the industry and our place in it. I’m hoping to give these women the skills to succeed in the industry, but also be another woman that will champion their success. One who understands that success starts FIRST with the community that’s behind you.
